Positives and Negatives of Teaching in a Technology World
Is the internet helping?
When we think about the internet and the benefit we get from using it, do we really sit back and focus in on if it actually helping our youth of today, or hurting them? "Most teenagers say the Internet’s ability to help them with their schoolwork and to help them learn new things is one of its best features." (Simon, 2001) You could definitely look at technology as a positive or a negative for that exact statement used above. For example, if students are using the technology platforms correctly and efficiently, of course it is a helpful tool. But, for the small percentage of students who abuse the internet tools and do not properly use it correctly, makes it hard for educators to lean in on that.
This survey was taken by 753 students in the months of November-December. Looking at the table you would think students used the internet and technology the correct way, if we also had questions about using social media, or online tools to help them find out answers and do their work for them, I think numbers could be close as well.
The Darker side of the internet....cheating.
"The simplicity of finding out things on the Web also makes it easy for students to cheat. Cutting and pasting text from a Web site and into a paper is effortless. So is wholesale copying or purchasing finished essays or reports." (Simon, 2001) With a lot of help from the internet and technology also follows with a a lot of hurt. If students are properly taught how to use the internet and technology platforms correctly for educational reasons, they would be less likely to get themselves into any type of "cheating" or "plagiarism". I think most students should know how to properly research a topic or write a paper focusing on a specific topic, but without proper guidance and thought put to it, students will just copy and paste what they see.
At the end of the day, it all depends on how the student responds and prepares themselves to use the internet and technology correctly. The world as we know it, is developing quicker than we can keep up with, especially in the world of technology. With proper training for the adult educators, and proper instruction for the students, we could definitely look at using technology in a positive light. When the pandemic struck there was no other choice but to use technology, so we all had to consider molding to the task of using it and using it correctly.
